Deborah Woolfork's Ancient Roman Glass Necklace is just one of her many one of a kind pieces of jewelry. You won't find these charms in your local craft store. They are all researched and hand chosen by Deborah herself. This piece has lots to offer to the eye. There are six charms that make up this piece of artwork. First, there is a piece of Ancient Roman Glass that holds onto the five other charms. Second, there is an 800 year old Byzantine Bronze Coin, you will literally be wearing a piece of history. Third, you will find a Raw Emerald, the emerald being raw gives it an unexpected and unique look. Fourth, there is a piece of Kyanite, which is a metamorphic mineral that most often forms from the high pressure alteration of clay-rich sedimentary rocks. It is often considered a highly prized gemstone. Fifth, there is a sterling silver ball. Each of the pieces are strong on their own small sterling silver chain and connect at the Ancient Roman Glass base. From the Ancient Roman Glass there a large chain link that splits into a small and medium sized chain links and then clamp with a lobster claw clamp back at the base of the Ancient Roman Glass. You truely can not get any more unique then this.
Raised and educated as an artist in England, Woolfork intended to work in textiles till some 13 years ago, when she and a friend spent a weekend in her apartment, making paper jewelry just to do something creative. The next week, she sold eight pairs of paper earrings to a Shaker Square boutique -- and a career was born. She now sells her jewelry to costumers around the world.
Here is what she has to say about her work:
"My jewelry is hand forged, fused, wrapped, patina and brushed sterling silver. I like to work with a minimal amount of tools which include basics such as wire cutters, pliers, hammer and small torch etc. The hand patina and brushing promotes a 'broken in' antique appearance which provides a fantastic contrast with the fine faceted gems my jewelry features. I use a wide variety of materials which currently include fine faceted AAA grade gems - all hand cut in India. Also Antique coin silvers from all over the world, mostly from Northern India, Thailand and Africa at the moment. Ancient Byzantine bronze coins, ancient roman glass, ancient stone, pearls, bone and river stones. I really like to educate my customers on materials and always find it fun to introduce someone to a stone they know nothing about. For example when using sapphires I prefer to work with the orange ones because people are least expecting them to be orange. I have used stones in their raw/natural forms of late. Raw diamonds and Emeralds have an unexpected simple dull luster and rugged edges and fit into my design aesthetic perfectly. I try to make each piece unique and individual which is why I'm always searching for new items to incorporate in my designs. I love the idea of being able to bring new life to an ancient stone that’s been in existence for over 1000 years and give people the opportunity to wear these treasures for generations to come."
